
Focus on Classical Spiritual Disciplines
Spirituality takes many forms. Some are widely accepted, such as prayer and worship. Some are more idiosyncratic to the individual, such as lighted candles and incense. None is to be disparaged, just because it is new or different. In seeking God, we do the best we can.
In our opinion, the healthy congregation will seek to ground its members in the classical spiritual disciplines, not to stifle other expressions, but to give them a sound starting point. It's like violinists who start by learning scales and standard literature, then go where the musical spirit leads them.
